The young boy who was killed after being hit by a sliotar has been named locally.
13-year-old Harry Byrne from Gowran, Co Kilkenny tragically passed away after the freak accident.
The teenager dreamed of playing hurling for Kilkenny one day.
It is believed he suffered head injuries when he was hit by a sliotar on Monday, 8 November. Harry was playing hurling with his friends in the schoolyard before the accident occurred.
He was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. Harry's school issued a statement following his untimely passing.
"St Kieran’s College deeply regrets that a tragic accident happened at lunchtime yesterday involving a young student of our school. The accident occurred while the students were playing normally," they said.
"Prayers and offers of support have been pouring in and are greatly appreciated. Psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service are present with us in the school supporting and advising teachers in their efforts to care for our students at this time.
"The school continues to be open to parents, to support them, and to offer them advice and guidance.
"Each and every one of our students are precious to us – we pray for each other today – May St Kieran be a support at this time."
Local councillor Denis Hynes also said the entire community is in shock.
Harry is survived by his parents Annette and Fergal and his siblings. He will be laid to rest on Friday, November 12th.
