Met Éireann have extended the country-wide, snow-ice weather warning ahead of another “very cold” evening.
The status yellow weather warning was due to end at noon on Saturday, February 2. It will now end at the same time on Sunday, February 3.
A forecaster has now said it will continue to be very cold until Sunday, with severe frosts at night and ice on untreated surfaces.
Regarding the forecast for Thursday, the warning continued:
“Some snow accumulations today on high ground over Leinster, Connacht and south Ulster. Tonight there will also be some accumulations of snow on lower levels over central and southern parts of Leinster and over east Munster.”
It will be another “very cold” evening and overnight, with more wintry falls, mainly in the south and east, with some snow accumulations on lower levels as well.
There will be frost and ice that form, resulting in some slippery surfaces, as temperatures drop to -6C in some areas of the country.
Friday, meanwhile, is looking to be a brighter – and mostly dry – day, with a few wintry showers possibly happening in coastal areas.
There will be “extreme cold with a widespread severe frost and ice” overnight, with temperatures ranging from between -2C to -5C, but even colder over lying snow.
The snow and ice is forecast to clear on Saturday, with dry, bright sunny weather for much the day.
Some cloud will begin to build across Atlantic countries in the afternoon, with temperatures reaching highs of 6C in some areas. It will be “bitterly cold” overnight, reaching as low as -5C in parts of the country.
The forecaster continued:
“There will be a widespread severe frost for a time too, with icy roads. But later in the night, clouds will stream in off the Atlantic bringing some rain, possibly preceded by a little sleet and temperatures should rise in the western half of the country.”
Sunday will see early frost in northern and some eastern areas clear, with all areas of the country seeing some rain – but it should dry out by the afternoon.
