Pieta House founder Joan Freeman has appealed to the people of Ireland to “wage a war against suicide” in this country.

The organisation, which runs a series of suicide prevention centres across Ireland, is encouraging 100,000 people to take part in this year’s Darkness Into Light 5K walk and show their solidarity with those suffering through dark days.

The event will take place at 4.15am on Saturday May 9th, with walks organised at over 80 locations in Ireland and abroad.

“It’s about increasing awareness about the scourge of suicide and self-harm and more importantly, it’s about hope,” said Oliver Skehan, Digital Co-ordinator with Pieta House.

“Hope that things can and will get better, hope that our work will continue to shine a light into the dark crevices of people’s despair and hope that people will reach out to each other, to find comfort in the support of others in what can be very, very testing times.”
