Vigils taking place for Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee

A number of Pride vigils are taking place over the weekend for Aidan Moffitt and Michael Snee.

This week, the country was devastated to learn about the murder of two men in Sligo.

The bodies of Aidan Moffitt (41) and Michael Snee (58) were both found with “significant injuries” earlier this week, and Gardaí are investigating if the murders are linked and if there is a hate-crime motive behind the attacks.

They are also trying to determine if the murders are connected to an assault that took place in Sligo town over the weekend, in which a man was stabbed and lost an eye.

LGBT Ireland has condemned the Sligo attacks, as well a homophobic attack which occurred in Dublin last weekend.

In a statement, the group’s chief executive Paula Fagan said: “Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones.

“These devastating crimes bring to the fore the need for comprehensive Hate Crime legislation, and I – along with other sectoral representatives – will be speaking with lawmakers over the coming days to stress the need for them to redouble their efforts and ensure the forthcoming legislation is effective, comprehensive and enacted with urgency.”

Over the next few days, a number of vigils will be taking place to remember Mr Moffitt and Mr Snee. This list will be updated throughout the day as more vigil details come in.
