Woman in her 50s dies and two injured after swimming incident in Wicklow

A woman in her 50s has passed away after she got into difficulty swimming off the coast of Wicklow yesterday.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to North Beach, Greystones at around 12.30pm after three women, all in their 50s, had gotten into difficulty while out swimming.

Each woman required medical treatment but unfortunately, one was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body has since been removed to the mortuary at Loughlinstown and a postmortem is set to take place at a later date.

A second woman has been taken to St Vincent’s Hospital to be treated for her injuries while the third was treated at the scene by emergency services.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and Emergency services attended at North Beach, Greystones, Co Wicklow on Saturday 23 April 2022, shortly after 12:30pm following reports of three swimmers in trouble.

“Three women, all aged in their 50s were taken from the water. One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body has since been removed to the mortuary at Loughlinstown where a post-mortem will take place at a later date.

“A second female was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital to be treated for her injuries. A third female was treated at the scene by emergency services.”
