Woman becomes pregnant twice in one week with two baby girls

Ellen Fitzpatrick

What a story.

A mum has revealed that she got pregnant while she was already pregnant within only one week.

After suffering a devastating miscarriage, Odalis and Antonio Martinez discovered they were expecting a baby in November 2020.

It wasn’t until they attended the first scan that they received some very unexpected news, they were actually expecting two babies, but they weren’t twins.

It turned out that the two babies had been conceived at two different times in the same week, only five days apart.

This is an incredibly rare phenomenon is referred to as superfetation, and it happens when a second, new pregnancy occurs during an initial pregnancy and typically happens within a few days or weeks after the first one.

While they technically aren’t twins, her daughters Lilo and Imelda Martinez-Atoyac look so much alike that even their parents mix them up sometimes.

The Californian said that she tells people they’re twins to make it a little bit less confusing,

During her first scan, Antonio couldn’t come into the room due to Covid restrictions and was forced to stay outside and only get text updates from Odalis.

Expecting to hear bad news after the couple had already experienced heartbreak when it came to pregnancy, but the news was the complete opposite.

Crying with happiness when she was told the doctor had discovered two heartbeats, she was left in disbelief after being told that they weren’t conceived at the same time.

The babies were born on August 10 2021 and Lilio, who was conceived first was also born first weighing 6lbs 12oz. Imelda then followed, weighing 7lbs 3oz.
