4 things to keep in mind when looking for a wedding band or DJ

Band vs. DJ: it's the ultimate wedding dilemma.

Whether you're looking to hire a DJ or band - or even both - for you're big day, there's a lot that you have to consider to be able to find the best fit for your wedding. For example, what kind of musical entertainment would suit your personalities; your guests; and your space at the venue best? And which one would be the best fit for killer moves on the dance floor? Here are four things to keep in mind when trying to decide between a band and a DJ for your wedding

What kind of vibe do you want?

The kind of music that you pick can end up setting the tone of your wedding - and, in some cases, the theme. Not to mention it's the thing that people remember most often (besides the cake).   So, you've got to ask yourselves: What kind of musical genre reflects you and your partner's personalities the best? What kind of atmosphere do you want to create? A night of 70s disco hits would be entirely different than a string quartet; just like a night of #throwbacks tunes would differ from the standard kind of wedding fare. And it's not just the atmosphere of the night that would be impacted in the band vs. DJ debate: it's all down to what kind of music you want. Big band-style music, for example, would generally sound better live - while it may be easier to have a night filled with nostalgic throwbacks with a DJ.

How much space do you have at the venue?

An eight piece band may be a good idea in theory, but how much room is there at the venue? Do they have any restrictions - either on the number of musicians or the kind of equipment they can play? For example, some places may only be able to have musicians with acoustic instruments (due to zoning restrictions or the like) - which is less than ideal if you've bene considering a rock band to play your wedding. Definitely one to check out before you start heading to showcases - or even making enquiries.  

What is your budget?

When it comes to wedding planning, what is or isn't possible is often dependent on the budget. And the music isn't any different. Live bands often come at a bit more of a cost than a DJ would, mostly because there are more people to pay (although, yes, there are some exceptions) and more equipment involved.  

Have you seen them live?

Another important one to consider: how do they sound live? Many bands and DJs have some form of a sample video on their websites, but being able to see them in action will let you gauge firsthand how they dress, improvise and work with a crowd. So, ideally, see if you can head to their showcases (again, many bands and DJs would have them every few weeks). If that's not possible, see if there's a way to watch a taped public performance - or even attend a dress rehearsal. If that is also not possible, make sure to ask for a playlist - look for the songs that you know and that you love. And, of course, make sure that the song for your first dance is in their catalogue - or if they're willing to learn it (if going the band route) or get it (if going the DJ route).
