Ciara Mageean: “The mental toll of having a bad day can be really tough”

Balancing the highs with the lows is a lesson we could all learn.

Niamh Maher

We caught up the Ciara to talk about being immortalised in a new book.

Ciara Mageean is on the latest episode of Girls With Goals, and it doesn’t happen often lads… but I was STARSTRUCK. The woman is an undeniable champion and (in my humble opinion) one of the most exciting sporting talents to emerge from this country in recent years.

Speaking of exciting, Ciara has recently been immortalised in a new Irish children’s book “Girls Play Too”. The book is written by broadcaster and advocate for women’s sport, Jacqui Hurley, and aims to encourage young girls to get out there and reach their goals. We do love a goal around here.

We chatted with Ciara about the highs she’s experienced lately, such as beating Sonia O’Sullivan’s 27-year 1000m record, but also how tough it can be when things don’t work out for you on the track.

Recently, Ciara competed at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm, finishing 12th in a field of 14 in the 1500m she admitted that it was a tough pill to swallow;

“The mental toll of having a bad day can be really tough. My bad days, unlike many other people’s, are on TV”

So, how do you bounce back from a disappointing performance when expectations are so high? It’s a lesson we can all learn and we don’t need to be a top athlete to do so.

Also, on this week’s show we have our first ever ‘GWG Recommends‘. Each week we’ll be recommending something that we’re loving, it can be something we’re eating, something we’re watching, something we’re reading, pretty much anything we’re obsessed with we want you to know about.

We’re kicking off with a bang by recommending Rosemary MacCabe’s new show ‘Not Without My Sister‘.

If you have a sister… or have always wanted a sister. Then this is the show for you. Get in touch with us to recommend anything you think we should know about!
