I am a complete romantic. I’m all for public displays of affection and I’ll admit I’ve amassed a ludicrous collection of embarrassing pet names for my beloved but even I find Valentine’s Day a nauseating cheese fest.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to take a moment on Valentine’s Day to acknowledge that special someone. But it’s the naff gifts and forced declarations that really do my head in.
I ask you, what woman after the age of seven would appreciate a teddy bear with “I Love You” written across its chest? I’ve seen six in shop windows this week!
Don’t get me started on red roses… Of all the uninspired, clichéd choices. He’s trying to say it with flowers? What he has said is: “Hello. I have no imagination.”
You think I’m being harsh? Forget hackneyed tokens of affection. Nothing says I love you quite like waking up to the dishwasher already having been emptied.
That said, Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to get all dressed up and romantic with your man. If you don’t have one, then it’s an even better excuse to pull on your best going out dress and cause mischief with your girlfriends!
