New York Fashion Week Features First-Ever Model In A Wheelchair

Changing the face of fashion.

February 6 2014, was a defining moment in fashion history as Dr Danielle Sheypuk became the first person to walk the runway in a wheelchair.

Clinical psychologist Danielle modelled pieces from designer Carrie Hammer’s collection.

Hammer said in an email interview: “I made the decision to cast ‘role models not runway models,”

The designer added: “It is so important to me that women have positive body image and are empowered in work and their life. My line makes dresses to fit women. We don’t make dresses that women need to fit into.”

Danielle says she has always had an interest in designer clothing but she believes that, “people with disabilities are an untapped consumer market in terms of fashion.”

Although they read the magazines, watch the shows and shop the items, Danielle notes that ‘nothing is ever pitched’ to them.

The psychologist was delighted to be on the runway and felt natural and confident, according to the Huffington Post.

“I was just another model in a show, and that’s exactly what I wanted.”

This is only the beginning for Danielle, Ms Wheelchair New York 2012, as she has more fashion orientated projects ahead.

Currently involved in the Raw Beauty Project, where high-profile photographers are shooting alluring images of women with disabilities, Danielle is proud to be involved in modelling.

The Raw Beauty Project can be seen online and will be exhibited in a Manhattan gallery in the spring.
