Swot Up On Style – A-Z Of All Things Fashion

You know it's F.

Cathy Donohue

You could study style for years, and still have scope to learn more.

It’s an interesting topic that doesn’t always get the love it deserves, with some dismissing it as frivolous.

We wear clothes everyday (although a duvet day now and then is compulsory), and wearing something you love can often change your mood.

In homage to the dynasty that is style, this A-Z guide will bring you a little insider information on one of our favourite subjects, this week concentrating on all things F.

French Connection

French Connection, (also known as FCUK) is a UK-based fashion retailer, founded in 1972. Stephen Marks can be credited for establishing the company, which distributes clothes, perfume, eyewear, sunglasses, watches and jewellery priced mid-range. It’s not high fashion but the prices aren’t exactly Penneys either. French Connection bodycon dresses have proved popular in recent years, as they’re very similar to Hervé Léger designs, minus the exorbitant price tags.

Fendi

The story of this luxury Italian fashion house began when a woman named Adele Casagrande set up her own leather goods business, and it accquired the name Fendi when Adele married Edorado Fendi in 1925. In 1999, it became part of the LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) conglomerate, owned by Bernard Arnault. There are five Fendi sisters but only one, Silvia Venturini Fendi, is still involved in the day-to-day running of the business. Karl Lagerfeld has been referred to as the ‘sixth Fendi child’ because as creative director, he is heavily invested in the brand.

Florence & Fred

Florence & Fred is an affordable clothing brand, brainchild of supermarket retailers Tesco. While it was initially seen as as a chain store line offering cut-price clothing, the designs revealed last season wouldn’t look out of place at a high fashion catwalk show. Tartan prints, check cottons, sophisticated shift dresses and graphic jumpers were just some of the pieces making waves among the fashion pack. We can’t wait for next season’s offering.

Fedora

The fedora exploded onto the style scene a couple of years ago and much like the bowler hat, it has a staying power that you don’t always see with fashion fads. Popular with fashion models and bloggers alike, it ‘s an accessible trend even if it seems a little daunting to begin with. Styled with a simple white shirt and denim shorts for summer or a winter coat for the colder months, it’s an item that can be styled to suit your look on any given day. Kate Moss is often spotted sporting a fedora and for a nod to this trend, try this River Island one, priced at €30.
