6 top fashion trends to get you ahead for Autumn/Winter 2022

Ellen Fitzpatrick

The trends are here.

Summer may not be over just yet but autumn is only around the corner and if you’ve been shopping recently, you’ll know that the clothes for this season are already making an appearance.

While we don’t want to start thinking about our winter wardrobe, now is the time to get ahead and think about the trends that are set to be major over the next season.

Whether you’re shopping on the high street or going from charity shops to vintage stores, there are some new trends to keep an eye out for and thankfully, nothing is too far out of reach for us to nail.

So what are we looking at when it comes to upcoming trends? From everything we’ve seen during A/W fashion weeks, update outerwear style is in. Think statement trenches we all have in the back of our wardrobes, bright colours we’ve been wearing all summer and major cut outs (Zara is full of clothes like this atm).

So what can we expect to see?

Sheer is in. While it can be daunting for some of us, it doesn’t have to be as extreme as it is on the runway. Everything from see-through maxi dresses and skirts to completely sheer tops and trousers, an underlayer may be needed in an Irish winter, but covering up our skin is not an option when it comes to what designers think.

Corset tops are becoming a major fashion statement and are here to stay, so anything with a bustier or corset style is something you need to get your hands on if you already haven’t. Thankfully, these are nothing new and are already in most stores, as well as pre-loved pieces so you’re bound to bag one no matter where you shop.

Basics are back, making a statement through accessories and trousers, the basic tank, t-shirt or vest top is all you’ll need. Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber have already become masters at this, so if you need inspo here, they’re you’re go-to gals.

Speaking about statements, the coat will be the centre of attention in any outfit this season. The furrier the better, the more print the better and if you can throw some colour or even sparkle in there you’re sorted. Think any coat Macklemore wore in his video for Thrift Shop, it’s all in and a real thrift shop is easily the best place to go.

Barbiecore has been brought up in fashion a lot recently, and it’s exactly what you think. Vibrant pink, especially the shade Valentino is most known for, is the colour of the season. While it’s not traditionally something we’d go for this time of year, it’s something everyone will be wearing and fits every skin tone. God, I wish I still had the bright pink cargo pants I owned when I was seven now.

As we saw earlier, showing skin by wearing sheer clothes is here but it isn’t the only trend we’ll see that is going for this look. Extreme cut-outs are here to stay and baring a little skin is something we’ll be seeing a lot more of. Dresses and tops for a night out these days are set to have sharp cut outs to really show off our mid-riffs and waists.
