It's a rookie error but sometimes we can't help but fall asleep with our makeup on. As dedicated as I am to my skincare routine, there have been nights when I'm too tired and accidentally fall asleep with the layers of mascara still on.
I'll wake up looking like a raccoon and my skin will be left feeling incredibly dry too.
It's never a nice feeling so if you're often guilty of falling asleep without cleansing your makeup away then you may want to keep reading.
Some people may see no harm in sleeping with your makeup on but it's actually quite harmful.
Not only does it make you look like Taylor Swift in the Blank Space music video, but it can also cause health issues.
According to research by Vision Direct, sleeping with eye makeup can cause infections.
Nimmi Mistry explained to HuffPost:
"Not removing makeup before bed can cause makeup debris to make its way into the eye, leading to the cornea getting scratched, and rubbing your eyes in the morning can only make matters worse.
"Once you have a corneal abrasion, bacteria, and fungi can more easily infiltrate the eye, leading to infectious keratitis."
According to Mayo Clinic, keratitis is an inflammation of your cornea. This is the dome-shaped tissue at the front of your eye that covers the pupil and the iris.
Symptoms include eye redness, eye pain, excess tears, or other discharge from your eye.
Other symptoms include difficulty opening your eyelid because of pain or irritation, blurred vision, decreased vision, and sensitivity to light, called photophobia.
You may also feel that something is in your eye.
