Michelle: My skin is entirely unremarkable. Occasionally spotty, occasionally clear, sometimes lightly tanned, sometimes milky white. (Once or twice in my foolish youth, it was a lobster red – we’ve learned our lessons there). But two of my favourite spots on my body are actually silvery lines. Battle wounds. The countless marks from cooking or ironing accidents have been taken care of well with Bio-Oil, but there are two scars on my body I love.
One has been there as long as I can remember. It’s two inches long and quite deep, and it sits on the inner side of my right leg. As a child I was cycling my first bike (a glorious turquoise blue creation with a white seat and bars) at furious speed, when a spoke popped out and slit my leg. In hindsight, and given the scar, I should have been brought for stitches, but I just kept cycling. Band-aid, they said. Be grand, they said. The second is a tiny scar under my left breast where I had a mole removed. It’s so easy to be lazy about taking care of your health, but I like this scar as a reminder that I took action. Also, because of its placement, I have a little joke with myself that it’s my boob job scar. Given the miniscule size of my chest, if that was true I’d ask for my money back, but I’m very happy in the skin I’m in.
Rebecca: When I was a teenager, I had really bad acne that covered my face, neck and back. It was something that I was very conscious of and I was constantly picking at blemishes. I tried tonnes of different products and medicines (as well as the odd blob of toothpaste) in the hope of getting rid of them but nothing worked. I remember lying down on the sofa every night so that my mum could put PanOxyl cream on my back.
After years of not seeing any improvements, I finally went to the doctor who put me onto a pill that controlled my hormones and finally I started to see some results. In the space of six months, my spots had disappeared although I was still left with some purple marks and scars on my skin. To get rid of these, I started using Bio-Oil which helped to balance my skin tone and reduce the intensity of scarring. At the age of 18, I got my clear skin and confidence back.
Úna: As my Grandad got towards his 90s, the circulation in his feet worsened and his skin around his legs began to deteriorate. As a way for him to relax and to increase the circulation I used to massage his feet using Bio-Oil as my base, while he sat in his chair reading the paper or listening to the GAA matches on the radio.
I'm no professional masseuse but after a few weeks of simple massages to the feet, it was clear that there was an obvious difference. The skin on his feet began to feel baby soft, he felt more at ease and was able to get up and walk more. There was less of a worn look to his legs and no doubt he seemed happier at the comfort and release of tension!
Cathy: Since a child, I've had mild eczema. It's not harsh by any means but it tends to flare up in times of stress, or whenever it feels like it really. Anyone who suffers from this skin condition or indeed dry flaky skin will know that it can be very irritating. It's more uncomfortable than anything and even wearing certain fabrics can set it off. I have to say Bio-Oil is fantastic for most skin complaints though and even if I'm having a particularly bad skin day, this manages to soothe and calm any raw red patches.
