Google’s New App Is About To Make Shopping Even More Convenient

RIP bank balance, you will be missed

Ellen Tannam

We know that Apple is already in the digital payment game, as Apple Pay has been in existence for a while now, but this new app being piloted by Google in San Francisco could make shopping sprees even easier.

It’s called Hands Free, and it sounds pretty deadly.

There are now over 2 million locations that accept Google’s preexisting payment app, Android pay, so there’s obviously a market for even handier payment tools and this is Hands Free where this comes in.

Their website sells it pretty well: ‘Imagine if you could rush through a drive-thru without reaching for your wallet, or pick up a hot dog at the ballpark without fumbling to pass coins or your credit card to the cashier.’

No more digging around in your cavernous handbag in order to spend too much money in Penneys anymore! (We can’t tell if this is a good or a bad thing).

‘Once you’ve installed and set up the app, Hands Free uses Bluetooth low energy, Wi-Fi, and location services on your phone to detect whether you’re near a participating store. When you’re ready to pay, you can simply tell the cashier, “I’ll pay with Google.” The cashier will ask for your initials and use the picture you added to your Hands Free profile to confirm your identity.’

It’s currently in Papa John’s and McDonalds branches in the South Bay area of San Francisco, and they are even experimenting with visual identification methods (but don’t worry, your photo will be deleted once the transaction will be completed).

Catch me in McDonalds in a few months, paying for my nuggets with Google. This could be dangerous.
