Claire’s Accessories is recalling kids’ make up kits following allegations they contain asbestos.

The move comes after a parent in the US sent one of the products off to be tested for the hazardous material.

The retailer specialises in children’s cosmetics and accessories and tweeted the warning after the set in the US was reportedly found to have traces of the substance.

Asbestos is harmful is linked to certain types of cancer.

NBC reports that a mother of a six-year-old child sent one of the kits off to be independently tested and received the results back confirming that the product contained tremolite asbestos.

The warning has been extended to products sold in the UK and Ireland and a statement has been issued on the chain’s official Twitter account for its Europe branches, reports the Liverpool Echo.

It said: “At Claire’s the safety of our customers is of paramount importance and we are passionate about the safety and integrity of our products.

“We work closely with our vendors to ensure our products are tested and assessed in line with the relevant country regulations and guidelines.

“As a result of today’s inquiry from WJAR-TV, we have taken the precautionary measure of pulling the items in question from sale, and will be conducting an immediate investigation into the alleged issues.

“Once we have information and have the results of the investigation we will take the necessary action.”

The company has since reported the list of products affected which includes nine make-up sets including the Pink Glitter Palette with Eyeshadow and Lip Gloss as well as the Rainbow Glitter Heart Shaped Makeup Set.

Customers are now being advised to return the products to store where a full refund will be issued.
