Alberta Watson has died at the age of 60 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

The actress, who is best known for her role opposite Kiefer Sutherland in 24, was first diagnosed with lymphoma in 1998 but recovered from the disease and enjoyed a 40 year career in film and television.

Watson shot to fame in Canadian series La Femme Nikita and appeared as Madeline Pierce in the US reboot of the series, which featured Maggie Q in the lead role.

She is recognisable to many as 24‘s counter-terrorism official Erin Driscoll, who fires Jack Bauer in series four because of the heroin addiction he was forced to endure to maintain his cover.

It’s understood that Watson died on Saturday evening at Kensington Hospice in Toronto, with her husband Ken at her side.
