No, it had nothing to do with the sex.

For those who can stretch their minds back to life pre-Dornan, our Irish lothario wasn’t always the first choice for the 50 Shades of Grey empire.

Originally cast with Charlie Hunnam at the helm, the actor announced he was dropping out of the role in October 2013, amongst rumours of clashing schedules, scripting conflicts and later that the role was too sexualised.

Jay-SUS.

Now in an interview with V Magazine, the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ star revealed the real reason he skipped out on the blockbuster film.

The star, who had previously starred in Showtime’s ‘Queer As Folk’ rejected the reason that the sexual side of the film was the reason for him dropping out of the project:

“The outside perception of that was that I got really cold feet and got scared of the explicit nature of the sexuality of the piece.

“When I was 18 I was getting f*cked in the ass, completely naked on national TV, y’know?”

So what was the real motivation in Charlie’s change of heart?

He had already given his friend and director Guillermo del Toro his word that he would star in Crimson Peak.

Hunnam said the move was “devastating,” “the worst professional experience of my life,” and “the most emotionally destructive and difficult thing that I’ve ever had to deal with professionally.”

Considering the film was widely panned, we don’t think it was all bad.

It also gave us a chance to watch Jamie Dornan for two hours on screen, so we can forgive him.

Just this once.
