Fifi Geldof has revealed she has battled with depression and alcohol addiction in a recent interview.
The 31-year old, who is the eldest of Bob Geldof’s daughters, revealed her struggles with alcohol and depression in an interview with the Mail On Sunday.
Pinpointing the trigger as her parents’ divorce when she was 11, Fifi said:
“I woke up crying about everything and nothing. I remember thinking what the f*ck is going on in my head. I thought I was going crazy.
“It wasn’t a slow and gentle descent into depression. Something totally switches in your mind. I’m still trying to work out what’s wrong with me now.”
Following her mother Paula Yates’ death in September 200, Fifi revealed how she turned to alcohol and drugs, while comfort eating to deal with the stress and grief. She reached a size 20 during the time, and said she felt "hurt" and "stupid"@:
“I was a silly, hurt, stupid, reckless teenager,’ she said.
Fifi also opened up about the shock of losing her sister Peaches earlier this year, saying:
“I’m not going to link depression back to Peaches. It’s nothing to do with Peaches. I can’t, in all honesty, attribute my sadness about my sister’s death to depression.
“Peaches’ death is like a piece of me that has been taken. A piece of my heart and my soul has gone.”
The newly engaged PR manager said she felt inspired by Robin Williams’ suicide last month to speak out about her own struggles with depression:
“Depression is nothing to be ashamed of, it affects an awful amount of people and yet there is still this ugly, shaming, misunderstood stigma around it. With depression you can have everything in the world and nothing. It affects people of all walks of life.
“When it takes hold for a couple of days it wipes you out. There have been occasions where I have been unable to get out of bed, unable to shower and to eat. You exist in this gloomy shell of a person. But you learn how to deal with it.”
