Great day for the parish.

Irish actor Niamh Algar has been named as one of BAFTA’s rising stars of 2019.

The 29-year-old, who is from Mullingar, was included on this year’s list of 20 Breakthrough Brits alongside other actors, directors, and producers making waves in the industry.

Algar is best known for her role in BBC’s mini series The Virtues, where she plays Dinah in the deeply emotive and touching drama.

She has also starred alongside Dublin’s own Barry Keoghan in Calm With Horses, and as Tania’s in Channel 4’s The Bisexual.

Algar was recently cast in Ridley Scott’s upcoming series, Raised By Wolves.

She told Press Association that she revealed the news to her mum before she was allowed to talk about – as you are probably wont to, when it’s your mother.

“I was on set filming up in Leeds and I hadn’t checked my email and I rang my mum and told her and then read down on the email where it says ‘please don’t tell anyone,'” she said.

“And had to be like ‘Mum, you know that information I told you? Forget that’.”

She added then on set, it didn’t feel like they were shooting a TV series, but a “really long film.”

“The sets were all built, there was very little green screen or blue screen and you’re on set you feel like you are on a different planet, especially being so far away from home, in South Africa,” she said.

“[Scott] does very few takes and I think that is just because he knows.

“He’s created the environment and he has put you in the right frame of mind and ultimately what you’re going to bring to it is extra so you only do one or two takes.”
