Sorry JLo, I actually think Virgos make unreal dancers

Sarah McKenna Barry

Do Virgos need defending? No, but I’m gonna do it anyway.

It’s not every day that I feel over-qualified to comment on the latest pop culture scandal, but when I saw Jennifer Lopez made headlines for alleged comments she made on two of my special interests – astrology and dance – I couldn’t hold my tongue.

You see, Glee star Heather Morris recounted a story she heard from dancers who attended an audition for JLo’s tour on the Just Saying’ With Justin Martindale’s podcast.

According to Heather’s source, JLo addressed the dancers after the audition.

Heather explained: “She walks in the room and she said, ‘Thank you so much, you guys have worked so hard. By a show of hands if there are any Virgos in the room, can you just raise your hand?'”

She then claimed that JLo dismissed all the Virgo dancers on the spot.

Now, there is no evidence to suggest that this story is real. Heather herself admitted that she could have “botched” its retelling, and that she may have gotten the star sign wrong, but in any case, the story has sparked conversations about astrology, and whether it should play a role in the hiring process (it shouldn’t).

While many stated that one’s zodiac sign should never factor into whether or not a person is qualified for a job, others, surprisingly, understood where the On The Floor singer was allegedly coming from.

“JLo knew Virgos would outshine her,” one Twitter user wrote. “I get the frustration.”

Another penned: “JLo cutting all the Virgos is such a prime Leo move.”

Regardless of whether or not this is typical Leo behaviour, I have to hand it to the Virgos, and say that if I’m ever responsible for casting dancers for my upcoming world tour (I won’t be), I wouldn’t show my late August to mid September babies the door.

For starters, anyone who has a Virgo in their life is familiar with their tendency towards perfection. They’re constantly looking to improve themselves until they get it right, which is arguably a desirable trait in a potential backup dancer. You want the choreography to be clean.

Secondly, Virgos are very hard-working, so they’re definitely capable to keeping up with the demands of tour life, and the challenges that come with being a dancer.

Thirdly, so much of dance is about control, and while Virgos have a bad reputation for being controlling, this is an asset in the business of show. One person who knows this all too well is none other than American ballet dancer Misty Copeland. Speaking to The New Yorker in 2014, she said: “When I was dancing, I felt in control and happy. I’m a Virgo, so I really like to be in control.”

Of course, it’s possible that JLo already knows this. It’s also possible that this story is merely some sort of Hollywood urban legend, and that many Virgos don’t need defending. But in any case, I want it known that Virgos would make an excellent addition to any dance troop, provided they have the talents to back it up. It’s also possible that as my rising sign is that of the virgin, I could be completely biased.
