She had no idea she was mispronouncing her daughter's Irish name

They're also growing in popularity around the world, especially in America.

However, some may struggle to pronounce them even if they love the idea of giving their kid an Irish name.

One Reddit user recently met a mum who gave her daughter an Irish name but she's been saying it wrong for years.

The pair met in an emergency room and got talking about the woman's daughter's name, the Irish Star reports.

The woman wrote on Reddit, "Her child was interested in the artwork I have on my leather jacket as it's pretty colourful. The mother mentioned that her daughter's name was 'Grain', so I assumed for a while that she was another mother who wanted something 'special' for her child."

The woman thought the name was so unique, but quickly realised the mum was mispronouncing the name Gráinne.

"At this point, alarm bells are ringing in my head because I've realised that the kid is called Gráinne," she said.

"I tried to be very tactful, and I was like, 'Irish has such an interesting alphabet. How is her name spelled? Irish names can be tricky.'

"The kid is called Gráinne. Not Grain," she explained.

She tried to tell the mum she was saying the name incorrectly, but she was not impressed.

"I said, 'Well in Ireland, they typically pronounce it like gro-nyuh.'" The mother's reaction was one of shock, accusing them of undermining her child's self-esteem.

"She told me that I 'ruined her daughter's self-esteem' and that her 'life [was] ruined' by me saying that 'her existence is wrong.'

"I didn't say that, by the way. I said that her name was pronounced atypically," she clarified.
