7 new Netflix releases we’re looking forward to this May

Keeley Ryan

Feel like you’ve seen everything on Netflix?

We all know trying to choose what to watch on Netflix is one of the most difficult challenges for human beings these days.

You’ll scroll, watch trailers, add stuff to ‘My List’ and keep browsing until it’s actually too late to watch something.

It happens every. single. time.

But now that there’s a new month just around the corner, there’s a whole batch of new movies and TV series’ to look forward to – including some stand-out ones you’ll definitely want to set reminders for.

And while the list of everything that’s going to be coming to Netflix in May hasn’t been released *just* yet, here’s a glimpse at some of the great additions coming to the streaming service next month.

The Society

The Society is the story of a group of young adults who find themselves transported to a town in New England (New Ham) that is, in every way, identical to the town in which they grew up. Only now, they are alone – both in the town and on the edge of a vast continent that seems very much like what the first Europeans might have called the “New World.”

The Society is a modern retelling of the Lord of the Flies tale – this time with near-adults and with no magic to save them. They will either succeed by remaking the social order or they will perish by each other’s hands.

When They See Us

Based on a true story that gripped the country, When They See Us will chronicle the notorious case of five teenagers of color, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit.

The four part limited series will focus on the five teenagers from Harlem — Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise — and will span 25 years, beginning when they were questioned in the spring 0f 1989, highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014.

Wine Country

In honour of Rebecca’s 50th birthday, Abby plans a scenic Napa getaway with their best, longtime friends. Catherine, Val, Jenny and Naomi are equally sold on the chance to relax and reconnect.

Yet as the alcohol flows, real world uncertainties intrude on the punchlines and gossip, and the women begin questioning their friendships and futures. A hilarious and heartfelt comedy directed by Poehler, Wine Country co-stars Tina Fey, Jason Schwartzman and Cherry Jones.

The Last Summer

Featuring several intersecting stories, The Last Summerfollows a group of recent high school graduates as they navigate their way through their final summer before taking off for college.

As the youths wrestle with love lost and found, form friendships in unexpected circumstances, and take greater control in their relationships with parents, they ultimately decide who they will be and what they will do as they stand on the precipice of adulthood.

Dead To Me

Jen is a sardonic widow determined to solve her husband’s recent hit-and-run murder. Judy is an optimistic free spirit who’s recently suffered her own tragic loss. When the two women meet at a support group, they become unlikely friends despite their polar-opposite personalities.

But as they bond over bottles of wine, Entenmann’s cookies and a shared affinity for The Facts of Life, Judy desperately tries to shield Jen from a shocking secret that could destroy her life as she knows it.

She’s Gotta Have It

She’s Gotta Have It Season 2 offers a timely and topical portrait of rising talents, with free-spirited artist Nola Darling at the center. Struggling with newfound success this season, against a backdrop of black art and culture, Nola must decide if she will remain true to her creative ideals or give in to the corporate world.

Her journey of self-discovery helps transform the lives of those around her, including friend and sometimes lover Mars Blackmon, who sets out to pursue his true passion of music as well as her inner circle of Opal, Greer Childs, Jamie Overstreet, Clorinda Bradford, Shemekka Epps  and Winnie Win.

The Perfection

A troubled musical prodigy seeks out the new star pupil of her former school with shocking consequences in this elegant and terrifying suspense ride, the most buzzed-about movie at last year’s Fantastic Fest.
