My Best Friend's Wedding is a superior rom-com
Hollywood gave up on the rom-com genre for far too long, but they're certainly making up for it now. With upcoming releases like Materialists, Eternity, and You and Me on Vacation, the beloved genre is finally getting the TLC it deserves again.
Rom-coms are the perfect type of movie because they make you feel good. They make your heart feel full, they're easy to follow, and often have the most flawless soundtracks ever. They're also not going to be four hours long like a Marvel movie or make you feel gloomy leaving the cinema.
They're the type of films that we turn to when we're feeling low, and there are plenty of classics to choose from.
Some opt for When Harry Met Sally, others will re-watch 13 Going on 30, but there is one I'll always turn to when I need some serious cheering up.
My Best Friend's Wedding has always been one of my go-to comfort movies. It has a stellar cast, a chaotic but endearing plot, and one of the best musical moments in a movie, maybe ever?
It follows food critic Julianne, who realises she's in love with her best friend Michael after he reveals he's getting married. Instead of keeping quiet and supporting him and his future wife, Julianne decides to sabotage the wedding so she can make him her own.
The 1997 film starred Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Rupert Everett, and Cameron Diaz and holds a very special place in my heart.
And it looks like the story will be given a new lease of life with a reported sequel in the works.
According to Collider, Past Lives director Celine Song is working on a sequel.
Actor Dermot Mulroney also hinted at a sequel in a recent interview with the New York Post.
The actor admitted he heard that there were reports of a sequel.
"I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote," he quipped.
We're ready for Julianne to return with even more chaotic energy and are praying for yet another Rupert Everett-led sing-along.
