A massive night for the film.
It was a huge night for Irish talent at the 2023 Golden Globes, with Martin McDonagh’s film The Banshees of Inisherin emerging as the big winner.
The film, which is set off the west coast of Ireland, sees Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson play lifelong friends who reach a difficult stage in their relationship with drastic consequences for all involved. The movie received a whopping eight nominations at the awards show, and ended up being declared the winner in three categories.
The Banshees of Inisherin won Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), while McDonagh won Best Screenplay and Farrell scooped the award for Best Actor.
Accepting his Golden Globe, Farrell spoke highly of McDonagh and his co-star Brendan Gleeson. He said that McDonagh “changed the trajectory” of his life, and that he will always be grateful for that.

“Brendan, I just, I love you so much,” Colin said. “I love that I get to cohabitate this creative space with you every day. All I did when I came to work every day was aspire to be your equal.
“I’m not saying I even got there, but the aspiration kept me going. And I’ll thank you for that for the rest of my days also.”
The actor gave shoutouts to the “extraordinary” Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan. For the latter, he warned him against ever hogging all the breakfast cereal the next time he shares a house with an actor.
“Barry, when you’re sharing a house with an actor you’re working with, a word of advice Barry. Don’t eat his Crunchy Nut Cornflakes and leave him with no breakfast in the morning,” he said. “You should never send a man to work on an empty belly.”
Colin also paid tribute to his two sons James and Henry, as well as the residents of Inishmore and Achill Island.
In accepting his award for Best Screenplay, director McDonagh joked about working with Gleeson and Farrell and promised not to leave it too long the next time. The trio worked previously together on In Bruges in 2008.
Barry Keoghan and Gleeson had both been nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, but fell short of winning. That award went to Ke Huy Quan for his performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
