Here are all the best films on TV today

Paul Moore

A few decent picks on tonight.

It’s that time of year again.

You know, the period where everyone is really depressed about going back to work and the TV schedule just isn’t as good as last week?

Anyway, here are the best films on TV today.

North By Northwest – 2:15pm on RTÉ1

It’s hard to take it seriously after that excellent Simpsons parody but Hitchcock’s thriller is still a masterpiece.

13 Going on 30 – 2:50pm on SyFy

A 13-year-old girl wishes she could skip the misery of growing up and become an adult overnight. Yes, it’s Big but Jennifer Garner is excellent throughout.

Matilda – 5pm on SyFy

In terms of chocolate consumption, weren’t we all Bruce Bogtrotter over the last few weeks? A perfect Saturday afternoon watch.

Independence Day: Resurgence – 6:45pm on Channel 4

Not as good as the original, but not as terrible as most other long-overdue sequels/remakes.

Yes Man – 6:55pm on ITV2

Jim Carrey says yes to everything he’s asked. It’s grand.

Maleficent – 7:05pm on RTÉ1

The sequel was very poor but Disney’s original reimagining of the Sleeping Beauty tale is still a very good family film.

Atomic Blonde – 9pm on Channel 4

Theron is great and the action sequences are excellent throughout. That jump off the balcony/continuous fight is incredible.

The Rock – 9pm on Sky One

“I’ll take pleasure in gutting you, boy” An action classic.

The Hangover Part III – 9pm on ITV 2

The wolfpack goes back to Vegas.

Under Siege – 9pm on ITV4

We always wondered what the conversation on set between Colm Meaney, Steven Seagal, Tommy Lee Jones, and Gary Busey were like? A cult-classic.

Chicago – 9pm on W

Two death-row murderesses develop a fierce rivalry while competing for publicity, celebrity, and a sleazy lawyer’s attention. It won six Oscars and kickstarted the big-screen musical revival.

Horrible Bosses – 9:20pm on RTÉ2

Colin Farrell, Jennifer Aniston, and Charlie Day are the best things in it. It’s ok.

Juno – 9:45pm on TG4

Controversial klaxon, it’s massively overrated and too cool for school.

The Night Before – 10pm on Comedy Central

On Christmas Eve, three lifelong friends spend the night in New York City looking for the Holy Grail of Christmas parties. A very underrated Christmas film.

Pulp Fiction – 22:30 on Dave

Royale with cheese.

Warrior – 11pm on Film4

It’s time to ring the controversial klaxon again because this writer thinks the MMA drama is the best film that Tom Hardy features in. Thoughts?

For a Few Dollars More – 11:10pm on BBC2

The man with no name still has no name.

Prometheus – 11:20 on Channel 4

Is it good or shit? Film fans are still debating the quality of Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien universe.

Finding Forrester – 00:40 on RTÉ2

A young writing prodigy finds a mentor in a reclusive author.

Gus Van Sant’s drama features one of the last great performances from Sean Connery.
