The cast of Sex Education prepared for filming sex scenes by doing the most bizarre thing ever

Sorry, what?

Denise Curtin

We weren’t expecting this.

There’s no denying that the sex scenes in Sex Education are both varied and oh-so steamy. When it comes to bases, it covers the lot and so, it’s understandable that the cast of mainly inexperienced actors had to “warm up” per se before filming.

But, how they got into character to film such scenes isn’t exactly what we pictured. According to See What’s Next, the cast of the Netflix hit got ready to fumble by acting out animal mating rituals. Yep.

Did we read that correctly?

An intimacy coordinator was on set for the duration of the season helping the cast get over any awkwardness by making them choose an animal and then reacting that animal’s mating ritual in pairs.

Speaking about the bizarre yet reportedly effective technique, Emma Mackey who plays Maeve Wiley said:

“We watched those, and then when we had a workshop the next day and we spent the afternoon replicating the aforementioned rituals on chairs and on walls.”

Continuing the cast explained that by acting out the roles of the animals, it helped them to differentiate their personal sex lives from those they were acting out.

“She was a really nice presence. She took away the mystery. After you rehearsed [with her], you know like eight thrusts here and nine thrusts there, it becomes like a dance routine,” added Aimee Lou Woods who played wannabe popular girl, Aimee Gibbs in the hit show.

Well, there you have it and whatever they did, it clearly worked as fans couldn’t get enough of the hit TV show and now, it has been confirmed for a second series.

Who’s ready for season two?

Praised for delivering a coming-of-age story with a fresh, feminist heart, and for presenting intersectional and multidimensional characters that audiences have fallen in love with, Sex Education has been renewed for an eight-episode season two – and is slated to begin production this spring in the UK.

On the renewal, the series creator, Laurie Nunn, said:

“The reception to series one has been so exciting. Seeing how people across the world have connected to characters that began as ideas in my head is incredible.

“I’m hugely grateful to every person that has taken the time to watch the series, and I can’t wait to continue this amazing journey.”

The excitement.
