The Chase’s Paul Sinha condemns racist abuse of contestants

Sarah McKenna Barry

“Those Chase ‘fans’ who had trouble with the ethnic make up of today’s show – the Chase was never, ever for you.”

Yesterday, quizzer Paul Sinha jumped onto Twitter to call out trolls who targeted The Chase’s contestants with racist abuse.

A recent episode of the popular ITV quiz show happened to have a lineup that didn’t feature any white contestants. The team – Michelle, Salim, Karen and Riaz – first answered a cash-builder, before going head to head against Paul. Unfortunately, some viewers targeted the team and shared racist remarks about the show and its contestants on social media.

Sinha, who is known by his chaser nickname ‘The Sinnerman’, took to Twitter and defended the contestants and called out the racist abuse. He then said that The Chase is not for them.

“I know it’s only a sad, inadequate minority,” he began in a tweet. “But those Chase ‘fans’ who had trouble with the ethnic make up of today’s show – the Chase was never, ever for you.”

His tweet was liked by his fellow chasers – Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegarty and Darragh ‘The Dublin Dynamo’ Ennis.

Sinha, and indeed the show’s contestants, were met with support in the replies.

Anne Hegarty wrote: “Depressing, isn’t it?”

“It’s pretty sad,” one fan wrote. “It’s the year 2022 and for some out there it’ll never be any later than the 1940s. And based on some of the comments on other social media platforms based on contestants on other shows, some of these accounts tend to behave as if we’re still in the Stone Ages.”

Another wrote: “I wonder how many all white teams there have been since the show started without a word being said about lack of diversity.”

A third agreed, writing: “Sad that some folk can manage to get offended at nothing and everything all at once.”
