Coronation Street’s set for a massive change after making new hire to shake things up

If there’s one thing Coronation Street is not short of it’s harrowing storylines.

Over the past year alone, we’ve had a mass murderer, a male sexual assault case, a kidnapping scenario, and Roy Cropper jumping over a fence.

All fairly dark scenarios in their own ways, to be fair.

At the end of the day though, there is only so much horror and upset that the nation can take. There comes a time where a soap has to take stock, figure out what viewers want, stop killing people off, and hire a comedy writer.

No really, there is… and that time has seemingly come for Coronation Street too because they’ve added Ian Kershaw to their list of writers in order to bring a bit of lightness back into the series.

According to the Daily Star, after former producer Kate Oates left the soap, the show’s storylines were left in the ever capable hands of a load of other people who aren’t that into grim and gore.

Sounds decent enough.

Kershaw has worked on a fair few TV shows in his time too, including Shameless and Cold Feet.

The move comes after Corrie was repeatedly criticised online for its attention to violence. Viewers and celebrities alike were regularly taking to social media to question why the lightness of the show had been lost.

Paul O’Grady even went so far as to say that the programme was becoming “like Syria.”

Ouch.
