Dublin city centre is getting a brand new cinema

Paul Moore

A nice boost for film fans in the city.

While The Savoy, Cineworld, The IFI, and The Lighthouse are all within walking distance of Dublin’s city centre, quite a lot of film fans in the capital are still lamenting the loss of The Screen near College Green.

Though not as big and opulent as the aforementioned picture houses, it did provide a nice mix of programming with arthouse films sitting in nicely beside more blockbuster Hollywood fare.

Well, film fans will be happy to know that the green light has been given for the construction of a new cinema on Dawson Street next to The Ivy.

The new theatre will be operated by the UK-based Everyman Group after it received permission to open its first Irish location.

The premises will have two screens, with a bar and dining area spread across the ground floor and basement.

One screen will contain 51 seats, whilst there will also be a larger 72-seater auditorium.

When handing in the planning application, the Everyman Group said that the cinema will provide a “higher-order, boutique cinema on a smaller scale.”
