Emma Watson stole the show at the MTV Awards for her speech

Laura Holland

Well done Emma!

Emma Watson won the award for Best Actor in a movie at the MTV Movie and TV Awards last night. This win was particularly special because, for the first time ever, the awards show put male and female actors in the same category.

While accepting her award, Emma opened her speech by referencing the massive change saying:

“Firstly, I feel I have to say something about the award itself. The first acting award in history that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience.

MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone. But to me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. And that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories.”

She continued her speech by paying tribute to Belle, her character in Beauty and the Beast, and the movie for it’s “diversity, literacy, inclusion and joy”.

The genderless categories marked a new era for award shows and we’re hoping others follow suit.
