Emmerdale introducing first transgender character as fan favourite returns

Jade Hayden

Emmerdale are introducing their first transgender character as an old fan favourite character returns.

Hannah Barton, formerly played by Grace Cassidy, is the youngest daughter of John Barton and Moira Dingle.

She left the village back in 2012 after struggling with her college work following the death of her dad.

Now, however, Hannah is set to return to the Dale as Matty after having undergone gender reassignment surgery.

Matty, who will be played by Ash Palmisciano, will be attacked by one of the Dingles who believes that someone has broken into their farm.

Moira, however, immediately recognises Matty for who he is.

Emmerdale producer, Kate Brooks, says that Matty’s character is going to be very “complex.”

She said:

“The character of Matty certainly knows how to make an impact: cheeky, effervescent, quick-witted and headstrong, it’s not long before he’s charmed his way into the affections of all those who meet him.

“His tale of a man trying to shake off his past and find acceptance in the present is full of emotion, humour and ultimately hope as he settles back into rural village life, turning Moira’s world upside down in the process.”

Palmisciano, who plays Matty, also says that he’s “excited” to start working on the soap.

He said:

“From nervous auditions to now working alongside the team daily has been truly amazing.

“Matty’s a ground-breaking character to play and I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for him.”

These scenes are expected to air later this month.
