It’s a fairly awkward moment – especially on first dates.
When the bill comes at the end of the night, and then there’s the awkward ‘who pays?’ shuffle.
Do you pay the bill? Do you let the other person pay for it all? What about splitting the bill?
Well, one of the contestants on First Dates UK have managed to kickstart the debate (once again) on social media after their episode aired this week.
Parliamentary researcher Cecilia and her date, Viv, reached the awkward standoff during their dinner when the 23-year-old reached for her card.
Cecilia tried to insist that she pay, or at least that they split the tab, but Viv continued to beg her to let him “be a gentleman” and pay the lot.
Leaving poor waitress Laura Tott looking very uncomfortable between the two of them.
Cecilia tried again, saying:
“Give me one rational reason why you should. There’s no rational reason why a woman shouldn’t pay.”
Viv, meanwhile, told her to “shut up for once” as he continued to beg her to let him pay.
It eventually came to an end when Cecilia told Laura to split the bill – giving Viv no shot at changing her mind.
The debated ended up dividing social media users, many of whom supported Cecilia.
Ok, I love Cecilia- what a beautiful, strong, powerful woman ❤️💪❤️#FirstDates

Other people, however, felt that she had emasculated Viv by refusing to allow him to pay the full tab.

Cant believe how the girl Cecilia from @FirstDates is getting praise when an honest genuine guy wanted to pay the bill then when he 'offers' to go halves she's even more disappointed…? Ffs, can a guy not make a nice gesture these days?
