Some fans of Gogglebox have reacted angrily after one of its stars appeared to joke about the #MeToo movement.
Ellie Warner and her sister Izzi, who feature on the Channel 4 series, have been blasted online after comments made by in last night’s episode.
During one segment, Ellie told Izzi that she and her friends had played a version of children’s game tag called #MeToo.
The #MeToo hashtag has been used by sexual assault survivors to share their experiences.
“I don’t think I’ve played tag since I were 11, or maybe even less,” Ellie said as the pair watched the 2019 World Chase Tag Championships on TV.
“No, I’m lying, I played tag not so long ago… but we called it #MeToo and basically we had to chase each other and either grab somebody’s boob or bum.”
Izzi seemed unimpressed, responding; “I don’t think you are supposed to make a game out of the #MeToo movement, Ellie.”
The comments were deemed “irresponsible” and “horrible” on Twitter, while others questioned how the clip made it to air.
Making a joke out of the #metoo movement to play ‘tag’. Fuck that @C4Gogglebox, should hold the people on your show to a higher standard. Completely irresponsible and sickening #Gogglebox

@Channel4 Cannot believe that clip of #Gogglebox was even allowed to air. How can that woman be taking the pure piss out of the #metoo movement? Insensitive and disgusting to joke about something used to bring victims of sexual abuse together

Channel 4 has not commented on the controversy.
