Goodbye pizza boy.. Domino’s is testing self-driving delivery cars

Domino's is shaking up the pizza game.

Denise Curtin

The future is here.

Domino’s could be changing the way you receive your Friday night treat forever with the introduction of self-driving delivery cars. Can you imagine that.

Currently, the cars are being tested out in Ann Arbour, Michigan, with certain customers receiving their pizzas from a vehicle totally human free.

Ford are working in partnership with Domino’s to create these cars, calling them”Ford Fusion Hybrid Autonomous Research Vehicles.”

According to the pizza company’s website, if you are chosen to participate in the study you will receive an upgraded version of Domino’s Tracker, then you’ll receive a text message that tells you how you retrieve your pizza from the car and then finally, you will receive an unlock code for Domino’s Heatwave Compartment to take your pizza from the car. Magic.

Speaking on the introduction of these cars, the president of Domino’s, Russell Weiner said: The majority of our questions are about the last 50 feet of the delivery experience. For instance, how will customers react to coming outside to get their food? We need to make sure the interface is clear and simple. We need to understand if a customer’s experience is different if the car is parked in the driveway versus next to the curb. All of our testing research is focused on our goal to someday make deliveries with self-driving vehicles as seamless and customer-friendly as possible.”

If all the testing goes well, Ford plan on producing these cars starting in 2021. This means that your favourite pizza could arrive to your door completely by itself within the next five years. Crazy.
