Every week, we in Her.ie towers will provide you with a blast from the past, a film that you cannot live without but nor should you, the classic film that you simply need to watch.
This week, given that it's Colm Meaney's birthday tomorrow, we take a look at The Snapper.
Released in 1993, The Snapper was one of those films that just caught the Irish imagination and you can see why. With amazing performances from the brilliant Colm Meaney and Tina Kellegher, to this day you can still here some of the more hilarious quotes being used on an almost daily basis.
The film revolves around the young Sharon, a woman from Dublin who finds herself pregnant at an early age and facing single motherhood. However, luckily for Sharon, she has the support of her family, particularly that of her wonderful Dad, Dessie.
Although she knows who the father of her child is, Sharon refuses to tell her father and invents a story about how she met him and who he is. When the real father is revealed, all hell breaks loose and Sharon discovers that she has affected not only her family but the family of her friends.
Based on the book of the same name by Roddy Doyle, the Snapper is a heartwarming story about loyalty, family and the challenges that life throws at you when you least expect it. On top of the performances, the script is second to none, touching in parts, hilarious in others, it honestly tells the story of how a family deal with a young girl falling pregnant.
Who wouldn't want a Dad like Dessie? Ah jaysus Sharon!
