Here is everything we know so far about Fantastic Beasts 3

Keeley Ryan

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is almost here.

And with days to go until the film hits cinemas (November 16, FYI), Harry Potter fans’ excitement is at an all time high.

But that’s only the second film for the five-part prequel to the magical series.

The third instalment of the franchise already has a release date – and, we’d imagine, the Crimes of Grindelwald is going to set up a huge part (if not all) of the storyline.

While we wait to find out a bit more about what’s going to be going on in the third film, here’s everything we know about it so far.

When is it going to be released?

The as-yet-untitled film is currently due to be released on November 20, 2020. And while that can still change, a November 2020 release date is looking the most likely – at least, based off the last two Fantastic Beasts films.

Who is returning?

It’s still a little early to officially know who will be coming back for the third instalment of Fantastic Beasts – especially with the second film just days away.

However, Johnny Depp has previously confirmed his return as Gellert Grindelwald. And it’s a fairly safe call that Jude Law will be back as a young Albus Dumbledore.

Eddie Redmayne/Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston/Tina Goldstein, Dan Fogler/Jacob Kowalski and Alison Sudol/Queenie Goldstein are all also likely to return.

And Ezra Miller looks likely to be returning as Credence Barebone after production on the standalone Flash movie was reportedly pushed back to avoid “scheduling headaches” due to his role in the third film.

What is it going to be called?

To be honest, we’re as much in the dark as you are.

And it’s more than likely that we’re going to be waiting a while until the big reveal, as the Crimes of Grindelwald’s title was revealed in November 2017 – a year after the first movie, and a year before the second instalment’s release.

Where does it take place?

There’s been no official confirmation yet, but J.K. Rowling dropped a huge hint about the location for the third film at the start of this month.

After swapping out her header imagine on Twitter, she told a fan it was “Rio da Janeiro in the 1930s”.

After correcting her incorrect spelling of the Brazilian city, she added:

“Let’s just say I really ought to be able to spell Rio de Janeiro properly, given how many times I’ve written/typed it in the last few months.”

When does it take place?

The first Fantastic Beasts film was set in 1926, with the Crimes of Grindelwald said to be taking place in the 1930s.

With the fifth movie reportedly set to wrap up in 1945 – the year Dumbledore beat Grindelwald once and for all – it’s more than likely that the third movie will have a pretty sizeable time jump. Or, at least, span a really long period of time.
