Irish horror The Hole in the Ground has been added to Netflix if you’re in the mood for a spook

Jade Hayden

“Something’s not right with him.”

You’re right, Seána Kerslake, there isn’t.

Especially not for your character Sarah, because she’s going to have to endure a world of pain, terror, and confusion for the next while as she figures out just what exactly isn’t right with her son.

Directed by Lee Cronin, The Hole in the Ground tells the story of a woman struggling to escape her past, a boy exhibiting disturbing behaviour, and a very large sinkhole that the locals don’t seem to be doing a whole lot about.

Starring Kerslake as Sarah and James Quinn Markey as Chris, the movie details a mother’s fear as she worries that her son might not be her son anymore.

And the horror that befalls her when she discovers that he is not.

Sufficiently scary, totally creepy, and with an outstanding performance from Kerslake, The Hole in the Ground will take you on solid 90 minute journey of paranoia and panic that could only ever be accurately represented through a giant sinking hole in the middle of the Irish countryside.

A slow-burner that’s riddled with suspense – as well as some genuinely terrifying images that may or may not involve an old woman, a nightdress, and a car window – the film does a good job of telling a story that you may have heard before… and a great job of making you feel like you haven’t.

With a solid 85 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes too, it’d be a crying shame to miss what has elsewhere been called one of the scariest movies of the year.

It may be the festive season, but c’mon – there’s always time for some fear.

The Hole in the Ground is streaming on Netflix now.
