A brilliant new initiative for those among us missing the cinema.

Streaming platform Volta is gifting 1000s of Irish films to audiences from the comfort of their homes.

The Irish video on-demand service has partnered with Screen Ireland to give fans of film the chance to rent curated titles from their diverse Irish film catalogue.

The VIEW IT ON VOLTA campaign runs for eight weeks and includes independent titles spanning three decades, including classic like The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Calvary, and lesser known movies like Pigs and Ailsa.

“We’re so proud of the collection of Irish films we have on Volta,” says Charlene Lydon, programmer at Volta.

“With the support of Screen Ireland we are pleased to gift these films to audiences with the intention of showcasing the depth and scope of Irish films that are available.

“Irish films that have made a huge impact at home and abroad but also Irish films that you may have missed over the years. The Irish are natural storytellers and we have a lot to say.”

Every Wednesday, a new film collection and gift code will be revealed on the Volta site.

To activate the gift code, users simply open a Volta account, chose which film they would like to watch and input the code to start the 48 hour viewing period. Content owners will still be paid for each film rented as part of the campaign.

Screen Ireland’s marketing and communications manager Louise Ryan says that she is hopefully the initiative will bring even more incredible Irish stories to a wider audience.

“We hope Irish audiences will discover and enjoy new Irish stories and storytellers, as well as revisit beloved classics,” she says.

“Collaborating with Volta, an Irish-owned VOD platform, is a reinforcement of our commitment to supporting the Irish screen industry in all its forms, as well as a celebration of the new avenues emerging for Irish filmmakers and their audiences to connect.”

VIEW IT ON VOLTA kicks off today, July 1. You can check out Volta’s full catalogue here.

This week’s code (July 1) is Debuts123.
