How did we not know this before now?

The Backstreet Boys have just revealed a rather weird fact about one of their songs. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of their first album’s release, AJ McClean sat down with Billboard magazine to chat about their career to date.

Included in the conversation was the admission that one of the boys accidentally farted during one of the songs and the fart noise made it onto the track.

See, we told you it was weird.

That’s right, a subtle bass beat in the track The Call is actually one of Howie’s farts.

During the recording of The Call, from the 2000 album Black & Blue, the producer Max Martin was getting Howie to sing his part and he accidentally let one slip. His fart was not only well timed, but also in key, so it was kept in the song.

AJ explained:

“You know what, there is one that I’m probably going to get in trouble for.

So when we were in the studio with Max making the song The Call, Howie was in the booth and we were doing that vocal break down, ‘dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun.’

Max gave Howie his harmony, and I think he was just putting so much air into the vocal that as he was singing, he went ‘dun, dun’ and he farted — but he farted not only on the beat, but in key. So Max tweaked it and made it sound like one of his patented bass sounds, and it stayed on the record.”

Here’s the song, see if you can hear it.
