It’s day three down here at Electric Picnic and the realisation that it’s nearly time to go back to the real world is looming over the campsite.
Things are looking a little worse for wear but there’s still enough energy in the air to pull off another excellent day.
For those preparing to leave today or tomorrow who don’t fancy lugging home a tent, we’ve just heard of an excellent charity encouraging festival goers to leave their behind.
Tents will be collected and brought to Calais and provide shelter for the hundreds of refugees who pass through.
Róisín Garvey of Green-Schools is coordinating the plan and will drive all the donated tents over to Calais in October where they will be badly needed before the winter sets in.
"Having seen the amount of good as new tents people leave behind after festivals and having seen in Calais how useful they would be, as there is so much waste at Festivals and so much want in Calais," said Róisín who is going to personally deliver the tents after the Festival.
“Green-Schools in Ireland teach children all the time about reusing and not wasting stuff so why not expect the same from adults? Especially when there are over 7000 refugees including over 700 unaccompanied minors with literally only the shirts on their back in Calais”.
The Electric Picnic organisers have been very supportive of the initiative and Global Green in particular are happy to allow tents to be dropped off there. Green-Schools Officers and many volunteers are going to come on site and help Roisin on the Monday gather all the donated tents and sleeping mats.
