Legally Blonde 3 will catch up with Elle Woods as a mum

It’s finally happening.

A third Legally Blonde film has been in the pipeline for some time now, but we finally have an idea of what to expect after its creators dropped some brand new details.

Earlier this month, Pamela Adby, an MGM executive spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the film, which is set for release in May 2022.

Adby said: “It’s really happening. Mindy Kaling and Dan [Goor] are writing it now for Reese [Witherspoon] to star.”

She continued: “Reese and Lauren Neustadter are producing with Marc Platt. We’re all developing it together.”

As for the film’s premise, the executive explained that Legally Blonde 3 will catch up with our beloved protagonist at 40.

“What does Elle Woods look like at 40?” Adby asked. “Elle is a mum with a thriving career. We’re looking forward to seeing the script come in sometime in the first quarter [of 2022.]”

Kaling, who shot to fame as a writer and actor on The Mindy Project, shared her excitement about being involved in Legally Blonde 3.

She told Access Hollywood: “I love the franchise so much. I love Elle Woods as a character. And when Reese asked me if I wanted to write it, I was like, ‘Absolutely!'”

Kaling continued: “I can’t wait to see people think of the way we’ve written Elle Woods at 40. How Elle Woods is at 40 versus when she was 21 has been really fun to imagine.”

MGM first announced that Legally Blonde 3 was on the way in October 2020. The production company tweeted a Gif from the first film and wrote: “Elle Woods is back! Legally Blonde 3 coming May 2022. We rest our case.”

The last time we say Elle, she was taking on DC in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. The sequel came out in 2003, so it’s safe to say that we cannot wait to see what our favourite blonde lawyer has gotten up to in the meantime.
