The singer says the pair have had their struggles.
Just last month, reports began circulating that Liam Payne and Cheryl were just weeks away from a split.
The following week, the couple walked the red carpet at the BRITs looking more solid than ever and successfully dampened any rumours that they were about to break up.
However, in a candid interview, Liam has revealed his relationship was on the verge of a split the week before the event.
The singer says that he and Cheryl have gone through a period of “tension” and “struggles” and have been torn between whether to get married or break up but walked the red carpet looking loved up and happy.
“The funniest thing was a week before we were getting married. The next week we’re splitting up,” Liam told The Evening Standard.
“For me, I just like to think we’re somewhere in the middle. You know, we have our struggles – like of course I’m not going to sit here and say that everything’s absolutely fine and dandy, because of course you go through different things, and that’s what a relationship is.”
Liam says the pair have been working their way through a rough patch and have been determined to make it through together.
“There was always going to be a little bit of tenseness in the way we sort ourselves out, but tell me a relationship in the world that doesn’t go through a spot like that?”
The interview comes a day before Liam and Cheryl’s son Bear turns one.
The pair began dating in February 2016 and welcomed their first child in March of last year.
