The plot sounds incredible which is alright, alright, alright by us.
After impressing in Guy Ritchie’s London-set gangster drama The Gentlemen, Mathew McConaughey is returning to familiar terrain with a familiar face.
That’s because Deadline have reported that the Oscar-winner will star in Redeemer, the new show from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto.
Given that the two men created one of the greatest- if not THE greatest – debut season of any TV show, our expectations are high for this one.
Redeemer has landed a script-to-series commitment at FX and the show is inspired by Patrick Coleman’s debut novel The Churchgoer.
In terms of the plot, we’re told that “Redeemer stars McConaughey as a minister-turned-dissolute security guard whose search for a missing woman in Texas leads him through a corruption-steeped criminal conspiracy, as his past and present impact and entwine around a mystery of escalating violence and deceit.”
Ok, let’s look at this in comparison to Season 1 of True Detective.
A main character that has lost faith in the profession that he’s working in? Check.
A missing person? Check.
Corruption in the Deep South? Check.
A mystery that spans different timelines? Check.
Ok, we’re in!
Given the fact that Season 4 of True Detective hasn’t been commissioned yet by HBO, this sounds like the next best thing.
“We are thrilled to begin our creative partnership with Nic Pizzolatto and Matthew McConaughey on Redeemer, who are back together for the first time since the first season of HBO’s True Detective. We’re also incredibly excited about our overall deal with Nic and look forward to developing new projects with him and our partners Fox 21 Television Studios, and we’re equally excited to be developing projects with Matthew through his first-look deal with FXP, ” said FX Entertainment president Eric Schrier.
The last time that these two men worked together, Season 1 of True Detective received 12 Emmy Award nominations.
To say that we’re looking forward to this one is a massive understatement.
