Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Calls Madonna a “Slut”

Earlier this week, Madonna voiced her support for Pussy Riot – the feminist punk bank who are currently standing trial in Russia.

However, last night, the singer was branded a “moralising slut” by Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Rogozin for speaking out about the feminist band. Nice, right?

The Irish Times reports that Mr Rogozin made his remarks after Madonna used a concert in Moscow to state her support for the jailed band. Apparently Madonna scrawled the words “Pussy Riot” across her back at her show and wore the band’s trademark balaclava during her concert on Tuesday.

Madonna has been outspoken about her support for the band during the past week stating that she was against censorship and strongly believed in the freedom of speech. Speaking to the media earlier this week, she said that she hoped the judge would show leniency to the three women from the band as they stood trial.

“I just want to say a few words about Pussy Riot. I mean no disrespect to the church or the government, but I think that these three girls – Masha, Katya, Nadya – have done something courageous, have paid the price for their act, and I pray for their freedom,” said Madonna.

However her comments didn’t go down too well with Mr Rogozin who took to Twitter on Wednesday night and posted the following:

“With age, every former s. tries to lecture everyone on morality, especially during overseas tours.”

Russian sources have said that while Mr Rogozin did not use the entire word, it was very clear what he meant as he used the first letter of the Russian word for “slut” or “whore.”

Mr Rogozin also made his stance very clear when he added the following: “Either take off your cross or put on your knickers.”

Punk Prayer: The members of Pussy Riot.

The members of Pussy Riot are accused of insulting the Russian Orthodox Church when they performed a “punk prayer” in public that called for the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, to be removed from power. The three female musicians are facing up to seven years in jail if they are found guilty.

Madonna has yet to comment on the remarks made by Mr Rogozin, however she has vowed to back Russia’s gay campaigners – a move which could see her fined if she voices her support during a gig, as promoting homosexuality to the young is illegal in Russia.
