The Pet Shop Boys are pop icons, so naturally music fans' ears prick up whenever there's an interview with either Neil Tennant or Chris Lowe.
One-half of the band, Tennant spoke to Noisey about the state of pop music today and considering he's basically a high priest of the genre, y'all would want to listen.
The 61-year-old was speaking about the current pop landscape, which he described as 'quite good actually'.
"Last year we arrived at a place where mainstream pop music started to, for the first time in ages, take in influences from what would be underground if it wasn’t underground if it hadn’t gone mainstream.”
He's a fan of Skrillex, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Zayn Malik and Lady Gaga.
However, what he had to say about Taylor is very interesting indeed.
"Taylor Swift is a sort of Mrs Thatcher of pop music in that she seems to be about economics… There’s a problem in pop music which is subject matter of pop music."
He then went on to criticise the fact that a lot of pop music is about one narrative type, aka dealing with fame.
"There’s currently only one subject matter and that is the singer, and possibly their emotional life, or their issues with fame.”
This was a salty interview and we love him for it.
