Who's ready to riot?!
Following on from highly successful and internationally renowned symposia on David Bowie, Morrissey and The Smiths, University of Limerick turns its attention next month to the role of women in rock music.
RIOT GRRRL: A Day Symposium on Women and Rock Music will take place at UL on April 16th. Organised by the Department of Sociology at the university, the free event, which is open to the public, will explore the significant contribution that women have made to rock music. As part of the event there will be a public interview and an unplugged performance with the San Antonio band Girl In A Coma.
Dr. Eoin Devereux, Head of the Department of Sociology and one of RIOT GRRRL's co-organisers said "RIOT GRRRL will throw a spotlight on what is often presumed to be a male dominated music genre. We are particularly delighted to have Girl In A Coma as our special guests. They have toured with Morrissey and The Pogues as well as many other performers. They are signed to Joan Jett's Blackheart Records Label in New York. The Department of Sociology at the University of Limerick has pioneered the way in Ireland for the analysis of popular music and media culture."
RIOT GRRRL will feature papers by a number of noted experts including Dr. Helen Reddington (University of East London) and Dr Julia Downes (Durham University), panel discussions, a documentary screening and a public interview with Girl In A Coma by Dr. Eoin Devereux.
The band will also play their first ever Irish gig as part of the UL event at Dolan's Warehouse, Limerick on April 16th.
