While Netflix relies on what you watch to make the next set of suggestions, it also massively depends on what other people in your area are watching.
So how does this affect your viewing options?
Well if for some bizarre reason you don’t like House of Cards and you’re much more of an Orange is the New Black kinda lady, you’re still going to get offered the political drama because it’s popular in your area.
Now, Netflix has decided to change the way their service is suggested to you – by catering only to taste and not location. So if Netflix recognises that you and someone in Germany or New Zealand all have the same taste, you’re now going to see their suggestions, and vice-versa.
Which means you could be about to be introduced to a new global hit that you’ve never even heard of.
Speaking about the new plans, Carlos Gomez-Uribe, Netflix’s vice president of personalization algorithms explained:
“Simply put, tapping into global insights makes our personalized recommendations even better because now our members benefit from like-minded viewers no matter where they are in the world.
“While this is especially helpful if a member is in a new or smaller market, we’re also able to better serve members in larger, more established markets who have highly specific or niche tastes.”
We think that calls for a planned binge-watching session.Explore more on these topics:
