Given that Netflix has revolutionised how we watch TV, it’s fitting that they’ve got some brand new improvements coming our way and it’s time to get excited.
2016 has been a landmark year for the company, they’ve just won their first Oscar for The White Helmets, and their CEO, Reed Hastings, was in jubilant mood as he addressed the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.
In a very interesting and wide-ranging chat, Hastings outlined some of the innovative plans that Netflix will be pursuing over the coming years.
If you’re one of the people that absolutely hate waiting on a TV show/film to finish buffering, we have some good news for you.
“We want to make buffering a relic like the dial tone on old modems,” Hastings said, referring to the noise that old dial-up modems made would make when you logged onto the internet in the early days.
In order to do this, Hastings stated that the company has already invested heavily in network servers, codecs and the content delivery mechanisms in an effort to provide an “instant experience on mobile, TV and laptops.”
The Netflix CEO reaffirmed that one of their main goals is to make every single video in their library instantaneous, regardless of the platform that they’re being watched on.
Regarding mobile data caps, Hastings said that Netflix “are getting more efficient in using operators bandwidth” as they strive to offer unlimited video without eating into the data allowance of consumers.
