Netflix’s new true crime series is picking up some incredible reviews

Paul Moore

It has been called ‘unmissable.’ Clear your weekend.

In August 2008, teenager Marie Adler reported that she was raped by an intruder in her home in Lynnwood, Washington.

Aside from the obvious physical and mental trauma, the teenager also had to endure another kind of torment.

Marie’s police report was instantly scrutinised by the authorities while those closest to her began to doubt her account of events.

Why?

Well, after the reported attack happened, there was very little physical evidence of the incident occurring.

To compound matters, Marie’s difficult past causes investigators to doubt her story.

Inspired by real events, Unbelievable documents the events which surrounded this reported rape, as two female detectives investigate evidence that could lead to the truth.

Based on The Marshall Project and Pulitzer Prize-winning article An Unbelievable Story of Rape, the Netflix series tells the story of an unspeakable trauma, unwavering tenacity, and astounding resilience.

The official synopsis states:

“When teenager Marie Adler (Kaitlyn Dever) files a police report claiming she’s been sexually assaulted by an intruder in her home, the investigating detectives, as well as the people closest to her, come to doubt the truth of her story.

“Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall (Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) meet while investigating an eerily similar pair of intruder rapes and partner to catch a potential serial rapist.”

Unbelievable is now available to watch on Netflix and the series has made an instant impression on the critics.

Deadline – “Measured in many aspects and mercurial in other ways, Unbelievable is unmissable.”

Rolling Stone – “With Unbelievable, the creative team and superb cast treat the subject with the seriousness and grace it deserves, while also telling one hell of a story along the way.”

Entertainment Weekly – “Unbelievable is an extremely satisfying experience – not just for its storytelling, but for its depiction of women who confront their reality rather than succumbing to it.”

Variety – “Unbelievable, at its best, is focused less on the system at large than on one individual ground up by it.”

Here’s a look at what’s in store.
